Strongest Shelves I Have Found
Comments about Camden County Five Shelf Bookcase:
PROS: This bookcase is the strongest I have found. It has 1-inch-thick shelves and uprights. It also stores more with a full 36-inch width (34 on-shelf), and no cheap-added support members on the front edges of shelves to block access. Shelves are 11-3/8 inches deep, except for the bottom which protrudes outward to 12-1/4 inches flat (a bit further decoratively, hence the advertised 13 inch depth). The middle shelf is not adjustable as it provides structural support. This bookcase weighs 150 pounds, and could weigh 700 pounds fully-loaded, so securely fasten the security strap on-top to a wall stud. It looks great - you will love it. CONS: First, I wish the shelves were a bit deeper (13-inches) to hold large ring binders without overhang - you can however put such items on the deeper bottom shelf. Second, the decorative top cover does hang down 1-1/2 inches in the front, reducing some access to the top shelf. Finally, as shown in the photo, each shelf is only partly usable as it is rated to only 35 pounds, when a full shelf of heavy books can weigh 140 pounds. This limitation is true of most kit bookcases - the shelves are not designed to be fully loaded. As an engineer, I have solved this issue by routing into the bottom of each of the 4 mid-shelves a 30-inch-long trench ( down the middle, 2 inches from each end) at 5/8 inch deep and 1/4 wide. I clean the trench to ensure adhesion, then insert a rough-sanded and cleaned Aluminum bar (slat) 30 x 1/2 inches into the trench and fill it with JB Weld metallic epoxy. The Aluminum bar has been drilled with 3/16 inch diameter holes every 3 inches down the middle of the bar to allow the epoxy to secure the bar in place. Each shelf is placed upside down (epoxy trench upward) and weighted in the middle with 20-40 pounds (a barbell works well) while hardening a few days. This creates a slight counter-bow of 1/16 inch (not visually noticeable) as seen on vehicle bridges. After drying about 3 days, the shelves are turned over and can hold the full 120-140 pounds per shelf with a center-sag of about 1/16 inch (2 millimeters, not visibly noticeable). The 4 steel pins that hold each shelf and heavy 1-inch wooden uprights have supported this weight for 4 years with no signs of weakening, and the shelves return to flat when the weight is removed. I have built two of these units in this fashion that remain like-new after several years, and am now doing 4 more units. This adds about $20 cost per unit, but is significant work that the manufacturer could do to create a truly functional product. Regardless, these are awesome bookcases and I highly recommend them as the best I have found.

We bought two of these cases and are very pleased with the look and quality. The back is a thin veneered pressboard, and could bow if not handled with some care, but it has a quality look. The shelves are thick and I don't expect they will bow. We purchased a similar shelving unit 7 years ago and there has been no bowing. We looked all over and this was the best pressed wood option for look, design, and dollar value.
