Taking time away from the office can sometimes feel like a double edged sword. On one hand, you're taking some much needed time away. On the other hand, taking time away also means that work will inevitably pile up while you're gone.
Preparing for your vacation ahead of time can help you prevent some of the interruption and pile up that happens when planning time away.
Below are some quick tips on ways you can prepare to take time away from the office:
Prepare as much as you can ahead of time
As the saying goes, luck favors the prepared. If you know something needs to get done before you're out of the office, make sure to get it done. Don't try and push off tasks that should be done before you leave until afterwards. It'll just end up catching up with you later and we all know how hard it is to get back into the swing of things when coming back from vacation!
Designate a point of contact
It also really helps to have someone to fall back on while you're away to answer any requests or urgent needs. I've always included my manager as a point of contact, but it could also be a close colleague in the same department as you that could possibly have a better chance of helping out than your boss who could be tied up other things. If you're the boss, have a chat with your boss on who can best fill the gap while you're away and make sure to relay that to all your team members so everyone knows. That'll also save you from reading and responding to emails while you're out too.
Set up an auto responder for emails
This goes without saying, but make sure you set up an automated email response to let people know you'll be away and how long. Something to also think about including is a secondary contact they can reach out to in case something urgent comes up. Its also a good idea to have a short chat with that person on some protocols to follow if something urgent does indeed come up. That way, you have a plan and won't be interrupted on your vacation.
Take some time to relax
Lastly, it may be tempting to work or read emails while you're out of the office so you don't have as much to catch up on later, but don't do it. Nothing should be so important that you can't get away for a few days and recharge.
