A List of Area Rug Types You Need to Know

Go Back

Its obvious to anyone that you can find area rugs in a variety of designs and colors, but did you also know they come in a variety of weaves types too? Every rug's design tells a story, and in this blog post, we're going to cover the unique features of some of the main area rug types that you need to know before you purchase your next area rug.

Hand-Knotted Area Rugs

Hand-knotted area rugs are handmade by an artisan that intricately knots the yarn around columns of thread. The end of the knots end up creating the pile, while the fringes on the edges of a knotted rug are crucial to the construction because they keep the rug together. We currently don't carry these types of area rugs on our site. If you're looking for this rug style, your best bet is to search for a local artisan shop or specialty store for one.

Hand-Tufted Area Rugs

Hand-tufted area rugs are hooked and tufted by hand by a local artisan. While weaving the rug, they wrap yarn through a canvas backing, which is then protected by a layer of latex and a second backing that anchors the stitches together.

This Flora Shoot Area Rug is an example of a hand-tufted area rug we offer that's features a beautiful floral design and is made of 100% polyester.

Flat Weave Area Rugs

For a flat weave area rug, yarns are woven directly on a loom, which produces an extremely tight, long-lasting weave. This type of area rug does not have a backing so it is easily reversible. With this type of rug, you should plan on using a rug pad to prevent it from moving so your guests don't slip!

Machine-Made Rugs

Machine-made area rugs are woven by computer-controlled machines. Yarns are inserted into a thin mesh backing and latex is applied to secure and protect the yarns. Below is an example of one of our machine-made rugs from our Fables Collection by Jaipur Living. You can't even tell it's machine-made!
