Beating the Blue Monday Blues

Go Back

What exactly is Blue Monday? According to Wikipedia, "Blue Monday is a name given to a day in January (typically the third Monday of the month) reported to be the most depressing day of the year for countries in the Northern Hemisphere."

The concept was first publicized in a press release in 2005 from a company called Sky Travel, who came up with a formula to determine the most depressing day of the year by factoring in the time after the holidays, debt, and the weather.

Here's the formula they came up with below:

The formula itself isn't based on science, so naturally many people are not huge fans of the concept of Blue Monday. Further making it a controversial topic, is the fact that depression is a mental health issue that should be taken seriously and not something to be profited on one day a year from something that is entirely made up.

While we agree that depression is a serious issue, we feel it is a light-hearted and fun way to make people get out of the post-holiday slump and take some time to treat themselves.

Below are some ways we recommend doing just that!

  • - Get a manicure or pedicure
  • - Treat yourself to a night alone to see one of the movies you've been wanting to see
  • - Take a day to relax at the spa. We recommend a deep tissue or hot stone massage!
  • - Indulge with some of your favorite ice-cream and a Netflix movie
